What we are looking for in volunteers

Skills

Good communication, great listening, problem-solving and patience are essential. Handy skills are very welcome but if you want to learn, we can teach you!

Attitude

Our name says it all, resilience and adaptability are important in our work. We do big work here, and patience, as well as care and compassion will help.

Flexibility

We do our best to organise well in advance but sometimes things won’t work out the way we planned them, and we will need to try something different.

Responsibility

Our team is a big one, with lots of moving parts. If you can’t make it to a shift we appreciate as much notice as possible so we can make other plans.

Team work

Our volunteers are an important part of our team, we need to know how to work together respectfully and how to resolve issues if they come up.

Positive Outlook

Disaster recovery can be hard, we will support you but it’s good if you know how to keep your chin up and keep smiling.

88 Day visa application process

If you’re a Working Holiday Maker (WHM), you can count your work assisting in the recovery from natural disasters—as ‘specified work’. When volunteering with Resilient Lismore, please submit your visa application number and passport number in your application, so we can include it in the necessary documentation after your volunteer time with us. You will need to keep a detailed diary of each day you work. For more information about visa requirements, you can check out this link: Work and Holiday Visa Specified Work.

FAQ

How many days do I volunteer?
The beauty of volunteering with us is that it’s entirely up to you! Our Hub is open 3 days per week, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays to the public from 9 AM to 3 PM, and our Repair to Return teams usually work from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. Whether you can volunteer for just 1 day or if you can join us for more, we appreciate any time you can share with us!
We hold inductions for new volunteers every Wednesday morning, unless otherwise arranged. It’s essential for you to meet with us before you begin volunteering so we can provide an overview of what to expect, explain how our organisation operates, and give you a tour of the premises. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know one another and connect face-to-face! We also offer regular training opportunities for our volunteers.

Yes! We ask that you wear appropriate clothing based on your role, and we will provide you with a Resilient Lismore t-shirt:

For the Repair to Return team: Please wear sturdy enclosed shoes, sun-protective clothing (no singlets), and a hat to stay safe and comfortable while working outdoors.

For work in The Hub: We ask that you wear neat clothing and enclosed shoes to help maintain a professional atmosphere.

No need to worry about that! We provide all the necessary tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep you safe and comfortable while you volunteer with us.

While we recommend having your own transport to explore the area, we understand that it’s not always possible. There are public transport options available, and for any jobs organised by Resilient Lismore, we have team leaders who use our work vehicles to ensure you get to your destination safely.

Yes, we prioritise your safety! Our insurance covers all our volunteers while they are working with us. It’s essential to comply with the directions of your team leader and to ensure the safety of yourself and your fellow team members. Always check in with your team leader about the required PPE equipment and the safest way to approach your tasks.

We sometimes have shared accommodation available for our wonderful volunteers in a house here in Lismore. Availability can vary, so please reach out to us ahead of time to see if this is available. Our community also has Air BnB’s and other places to stay including caravan parks and motels.

We ask our volunteers to provide their own food. We have a refrigerator available to store food at the hub, and if you join the Repair to Return team there are eskies and coolers available. Tea and coffee is freely available for all our volunteers.

To fulfill the requirements of your 88-day visa, we’ll ask you to keep track of your volunteering days with a simple spreadsheet. Be sure to sign in and out each day at the Hub, and once you finish your commitment, we’ll provide a letter confirming your days and the work you’ve done. Just remember to provide your visa number and passport for our records. We’re here to support you!
